CultureClic & Augmented eTourism presented at Europeana Awareness Event “Culture for Digital Innovation”

i-Marginal was invited as expert by the European Commission and Europeana for the Europeana Awareness Event “Culture for Digital Innovation” to present our CultureClic & Augmented eTourisme projects on the evening of the 9th May 2012 in Brussels.

The event, organised together with the Danish Presidency, gathered six Ministers from the Education, Youth and Culture (EYC) Council, senior leaders of European memory organisations and leading figures in the creative industries to raise awareness of Europeana among citizens and to demonstrate that online cultural heritage is driver for growth. Europeana is the online point of access to Europe’s cultural heritage. It currently provides an easy-to-use, single access point to more than 23 million objects from some 2,200 cultural institutions in Europe.

The Seminar ‘Culture for Creativity - Recommendations for Change’ where i-Marginal was invited to participate, brought together directors of European memory organisations and leading figures from the creative industries. We presented our experiences with CultureClic of opening up digital contents and outline how they think it will contribute to growth in the digital economy.

The seminar chair and moderator was Geoff Meade.
Speakers invited:

  • - The importance of Open data for growth: Nigel Shadbolt, Professor of Artificial
Intelligence (AI) at the University of Southampton
  • - The open philosophy of Europeana: Harry Verwayen, Business Development Director Europeana
  • - The Creative Industries case study, CultureClic, Jean Rémi Deléage, DG iMarginal
  • - The Library case study, Bas Savenije, Director General of the Royal Library of the Netherlands
  • - The Museum case study, Michal Lukeš, Ph.D - Director General of Czech National Museum
  • -The Archives case study, Bjorn Jordell, National Archivist of Sweden

Here are the main Recommendations that came out of the Innovation seminar:

- Invest in digitization – only 15% of our cultural heritage is digitised so far

- Make copyright work in the digital age

- Explore the new business models based on opening up content

- Exploit the power of open – data, licences, standards
